The consequence of the development (during 1960’s and 1970’s) economic, social and cultural changes in Morocco’s rural areas, with the move away from nomadic animal husbandry to settled farming and other modern forms of rural employment (wool as the primary raw material for the production of carpets for Moroccan domestic use) has become ever rarer, and replacement materials have become ever more important.
Berber women in morocco started to create a new type of rug which they did’nt weave from wool. It’s also popularly known as the Moroccan boucherouite rug. In Darija “bu sherwit”, the langage used in the street in Morocco. Boucherouite means ”old clothing” a piece torn from recycled clothing. Instead of using wool to weave the rugs, women in Morocco started to use garments from recycled carpets and textiles. The materials used include recycled rag strips and yarns from a variety of textile remnants, including wool, cotton, synthetic fibres, Lurex, nylon and plastic from grain shipping bags as well as packaging material. The positiv aspect of these rugs is that they have a minimal impact on the environment so are gentle for our planet.
Many people in Morocco use these carpets to place it on a donkey or a horse and you can frequently see people using this rug as covers for the desert. These rugs are also used to cover up the expensive woolen carpet at the house. It’s ideal when members of a family want to sit down to prepare food. If there are small children in the room especially babies, this kind of carpets are perfect.
