Boucherouite rugs are a riot of colour all jostling with exuberant patterns. During 1960‘s and 1970’s, the consequence of the development in Morocco’s rural areas made wool ever rarer and expensive. The women in all the regions in Morocco started to create a new type of rug, that didn’t used wool, the Moroccan Boucherouite rug. It’s extravagant, pop, funky, stylish and trendy. Typically made from a variety of recycled materials and textiles like recycled rag strips and yarns from a variety of textile remnants, old clothing, cotton, synthetic fibres, lurex, nylon and plastic from grain shipping bags as well as packaging material to create this beautiful rug. Berber people use the boucherouite to place it on a mule or a horse or to cover up the expensive woolen rug in the house. It’s ideal when members of a family want to sit down to prepare food and if there is small children in the room. Boucherouite rug has a minimal impact on the environment and is gentle for our planet.
