Hand knotted Moroccan Rug
Marmoucha rugs comes from the east of the Middle Atlas of the Immouzer capital and is highly influenced by the Beni Ourain rugs with their black patterns, sometimes brown and orange, based on a cream background. The region is known for his preserved landscapes, vast forests, mountains of medium and high altitude. The people living there are still mainly Amazigh.
The Marmouchas also excel in the art of the Berber mat (Hacera) which have the distinction of being much finer. The braided palm leaves are crushed beforehand, until they form a kind of very fine vegetable fiber, then woven and covered with wool. Their motifs are sometimes geometric and very thin, sometimes more crazy with small additions of different materials. The women of this tribe have always been excellent in the art of carpet weaving, a tradition they continue to conscientiously perpetuate.
Moroccan interior style and architecture is well-known for his beldi (traditional) charm and exotic at the same time. Intricate details, quality of weaving, purity of material and traditional methods add a real value to the Moroccan rugs and create a stunning visual effect.
Berber women, who are the maneuvering leaders of the Moroccan carpet, spend weeks and sometimes months setting up a carpet. This time is justified by other household and family tasks. In general, the average time of weaving or knotting is two hours per day for each woman.
The Symbolism of the Berber carpet is the expression of a primordial fertility cult, originating from remote early civilizations. There is no other form of artisanal art in which this ancient symbolism remains so alive until today. This is the unique particularity significance of the Berber carpet.
Berber women are the creator of all the famous Moroccan rugs. While they weave a rug, they add always a personal touch by creating designs with strong meaning and story. Based on history, the tribe’s people living in the atlas mountains were in the need of some furniture that will keep them warm during the cold seasons. Since the only resource of living was pasturing, they used sheep fleece for weaving in order to be spun into a yarn that gives birth to rugs. These handwoven rugs are designed with different symbols like the lozenge, lozenge with extended sides, chevron, X-shape, straight line with hatching, triangles, ladders, zigzag etc… Each one had a meaning for instance lozenge, X-shape, chevron refer to women and straight lines, sticks and twig-and-ladder refer to men. Many others carry themes such as birth, protection against the evil eye, good fortune which holds Baraka, fertility and magical power. All the symbols have their own signification and were conveyed from weaver to weaver over centuries. This is the reason why it still retains their authenticity.
The sheep wool is known for his resistant structure by producing resilient fibers that retain the shape after stretching or washing. This material has many advantages: it provides warmth, bring softness for your interior, absorb moisture and is very resistant to time. With all these features, Moroccan rugs are known like very durable rugs.
