Urban carpet production in Rabat was initiated during the 18th century in response to a strong domestic demand for Ottoman style furnishings and art. Weavers borrowed formats and designs from Turkish carpets, while they retained color tones and elongate rectangular sizes that were distinctly Moroccan. The length to width ratioo solved the practical limitations imposed by houses crowded within the confines of walled cities and constructed around open central courtyards. Regardless or how small or large the dwelling, the rooms surrounding the courtyard were by necessity oblong, and the rugs were woven accordingly.
