Kilim Zayan carpets are single-knot carpets highlighted with additional colours. In Kilim it is the fineness of the drawing and the quality of the tightening that matters. The kilim, also spelled klim or kelim, is a woven rug instead of being knotted. The carpet patterns are geometric, the tones are ethnic and the texture is fine. Their rendering is more flexible and lighter. Originally, the kilim served as a cover and to protect the ground of mosques and yurts. Nowadays, it can be used on the floor, on the walls, as a sofa, on the headboard or against a wall.

The kilim is composed of parallel stripes of different colors. When making a kilim, the patterns are created by the weft threads themselves and patterns are created on the carpet by turning the thread. Turning the wire creates a small cavity that should not be too big. It's with this technique that the traditional staircase patterns characteristic of kelims are created and the carpet looks the same on both sides. The ends of the threads are usually hidden, but there are other methods of manufacture where the threads hang freely on the back of the carpet. The weft is visible and constitutes velvet. The kilims are therefore only made of warp and weft yarn. Two threads form the weft: the first is used for the decoration of the carpet and the second is intended to consolidate the carpet. The decorative thread is wrapped in the chain stitch around two warp threads. The design of the kilim, by its method of manufacture, is more rudimentary than on knotted carpets.Β Although manufactured without hair, the kilim is very resistant because of the double weft which gives a tight weave. However, it has little grip on the ground. The advantage of Kilim is that in addition to undeniably warming a room with its colors, authenticity and character, it brings an ethnic touch to your room. The success of Kilim carpets came into competition with Berber carpets around 2015 following the emergence of the "Kinfolk" trend. Like the Scandinavian minimalist trend, the Kinfolk focuses on the mix of genres, the eclectic styles, colors, a happy brothel that mixes Kilims carpets, artifacts, plants and vintage furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean my Moroccan rug?

Caring for your Moroccan rug is simple! For regular maintenance, we recommend gently vacuuming it 1-2 times a week (use a suction-only attachment, without a beater bar) and air it outside every few months. For minor spills, act quickly by blotting the area with a clean, dry cloth. If needed, use a small amount of water and a gentle soap. For deep cleaning, we strongly recommend seeking a professional rug cleaner who specializes in wool carpets to preserve the rug's natural fibers and vibrant colors for years to come.

Is Moroccan wool rugs durable and suitable for high-traffic areas?

Absolutely. Hand-knotted from 100% sheep wool, Moroccan rugs are renowned for their durability and resilience. Our rugs are perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, and other frequently used spaces, but be sure to follow care instructions, like rotating regularly, to keep it looking its best for years.

Do newly made wool Moroccan rugs shed?

It is completely normal for a new wool rug to shed a little at first. This is a natural characteristic of high-quality wool fibres and a sign of its authenticity. This initial shedding will decrease significantly over a few weeks with regular, gentle vacuuming.

Will the rug I receive look exactly like the one in the photo?

You will receive the exact rug shown in the photos. However, please remember that these are handmade items. We do our best to capture the colours accurately, but they may vary slightly depending on your screen's lighting and calibration. Any minor variations or "imperfections" in the pattern are part of the unique story and charm of your one-of-a-kind piece.

What are your rugs made of?

Our rugs are crafted from 100% natural, locally sourced sheep's wool. The wool's quality gives the rugs their signature softness, durability, and rich texture. The foundation (or warp) of the rug is sometimes made of cotton, which provides a strong and stable base for the wool knots.
